This note is inspired by the recent discourse around the plight of tea workers in Bangladesh to raise their daily wages. Despite a marginal increase in their wages as a result of the protest, it is inadequate in the face of current inflation, and their life and livelihoods continue to be under significant strain.

বর্তমান কোভিড-১৯ অতিমারি নিঃসন্দেহে বাংলাদেশের সকল নাগরিকের ওপর বিরূপ প্রভাব ফেলেছে। কিন্তু প্রান্তিক এবং পিছিয়ে পড়া জনগোষ্ঠীর ওপর এ অতিমারির অভিঘাত তুলনামূলকভাবে অনেক বেশি। ঝুঁকিতে থাকা এসব মানুষের জন্য এই মুহুর্তে প্রয়োজন সুনির্দিষ্ট নীতিমালা এবং তা বাস্তবায়নের জন্য সঠিক দিক নির্দেশনা।
রেমিট্যান্স প্রবাহ বাংলাদেশের পরিবারিক পর্যায়ে এবং সামষ্টিক অর্থনৈতিক ব্যবস্থাপনা উভয় ক্ষেত্রেই উল্লেখযোগ্য অবদান রেখে চলেছে। করোনা অতিমারির সময়ে সাধারণ প্রত্যাশার বিপরীতে ২০২০ সালে রেমিট্যান্স প্রবাহে প্রায় ১৮ শতাংশ প্রবৃদ্ধি হয়েছে। এই উচ্চ প্রবৃদ্ধির পেছনের কারণসমূহ কী হতে পারে তা নিয়ে নানা ধরণের আলোচনা হয়েছে।
This Briefing Note has been prepared based on the outcome of the virtual dialogue titled “Experiences from the current situation at the grassroots level: Achievements and challenges” held on 8 July 2020.It was attended by 80 professionals including development activists, business leaders, researchers, academics, youth representatives, and journalists who are actively engaged in dealing with the COVID-19 induced challenges across the country.
This document puts forward grassroots level insights as regards the challenges faced by different marginalised communities and the private sector as a consequence of the pandemic. A number of sectoral issues, particularly relevant in view of the SDGs, were also discussed. The takeaways from this briefing note might be useful for formulating an effective public policy response to tackle the COVID-19 induced challenges towards SDG attainment in Bangladesh.
