Introduction of the organisation
Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA), a non-governmental organization of lawyers was set up in 1993 in response to the global call for movement to protect and conserve natural environment that has strong justification in a rural agronomy based country like Bangladesh. The objective of BELA is to promote environmental justice and contribute towards the development of a sound environmental jurisprudence.
Programmatic interventions in response to COVID-19
BELA has taken precautionary measures from the very beginning of COVID-19 outbreak for its all staffs. Staff were instructed to use hand sanitized at the work place and the supply made available; The field officials were clearly instructed over the phone what to do and what not to do.
In this crucial time, though it is not that huge amount, the officials of BELA head office contributed an amount to a student group who were making hand sanitizer for the poor and disadvantaged people.
Future outlook and recommendations
- BELA plans to give some emergency support to its community members;
- It will work with other like-minded strategic groups to arrange public events on the catastrophic failure of the government to have even minimum preparation to support infected people;
- It will also arrange public event on importance of local food production in handling catastrophe like COVID 19.
