Nagorik Uddyog (NU)

NU was founded in 1995 by a group of nationally and internationally renowned Bangladeshi human rights activists and academics aiming to promote good governance, access to justice and institutionalising democracy at the local and national level. Since its establishment, NU has been working to strengthen local government via the dual imperatives of, on the one hand, raising awareness among the general masses of people’s basic human rights and, on the other, building people’s capacity to pursue and realise these rights. At the beginning, the organisation worked on voter education programme and raising awareness among the women that they can claim their rights from local government institutions and from the community. Over the period of time, NU extended its activities across the country with specific focus on rights of marginalised people specially Dalit Rights and access to justice of rural communities.

NU envisages a poverty free nation with equal rights and dignity irrespective of race, colour, sex, language, religion, ethnic or social origin, income, birth or other opinion and status.

A society based on social and gender justice, equality and rule of law with accountable, transparent and responsive institutions by mobilising community people through building their own self-sustain organisations that they can realise their rights and entitlements, with special focus on women, socially excluded, unprivileged and minority communities.
