Gandhi Ashram Trust (GAT)

 GAT is a philanthropic development organisation working at Noakhali. It is working since 1946 with Gandhian philosophy of rural development, peace and social harmony. Since inception, GAT is working for the rural poor, especially for women, in the encircled area of the Ashram. It has two prong functions of development and charitable activities. The goal, objectives and activities of GAT are derived from the core value of Gandhian philosophy and guideline.

After the Independence of Bangladesh, with the emergence of GAT, there are a shift in the vision and mission of the Trust. Development and extension services for the poor and disadvantaged class were taken into consideration along with charitable functions. Now a day, development of life standard, both in material and eternal, is the GAT. In 1975, Government of Bangladesh promulgated an Ordinance namely “Gandhi Ashram Board of Trustees” and under this board there are 7 trustees are nominated by the Government. Eminent economist of Bangladesh Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya is the Chair of the Board.

Presently it is working with Local Government institutions to promote Human Rights and Good Governance at Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Feni and Comilla Districts. GAT has 3 schools, 1 Medical Training Institute, 3 ICT centers, 2 Handloom centers, etc.
