The Fred Hollow Foundation Bangladesh
Fred Hollow Foundation is working to break the cycle of poverty by restoring people’s sight. In 2016, with the support of the Australian public, the Australian Aid Program, Standard Chartered Bank and The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, Fred Hollow is implementing over AUD$2m worth of projects to eliminate avoidable blindness in Bangladesh.
The Foundation, together with the Government of Bangladesh, NGOs, local organisations and other organisations has been working successfully to eliminate avoidable blindness in Bangladesh through health systems strengthening and setting up sustainable eye care programs since 2008. Till date, the Foundation has supported more than 1421000 screenings, 75000 cataract surgeries, treatment of 7000 Diabetic Retinopathy patients and detection and correction of 233000 refractive error cases in Bangladesh at minimal cost. It specially focuses on vulnerable and marginalized population such as the indigenous communities and poor women.
Fred Hollow foundation’s initiatives include targeted gender communication campaigns, outreach screening camps, establishment of separate waiting spaces at Outpatient Department’s and building the capacity of female health workforce of the future and also developing ways to detect the condition, refer and treat people and to integrate these models into diabetes management.
