DALIT – Hope for the Oppressed
DALIT is a non-governmental, non-partisan and non-profit organisation established in 1998 by a group of young DALIT people working for the development of the DALIT and other vulnerable and socially excluded groups so that they can meet their basic needs. DALIT promotes human dignity for the communities who are deprived from their fundamental basic rights declared in the constitution of Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh and Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1999 it got the recognition from the NGO Affairs Bureau and it started its programs in a more organic way. In 2010 it got the registration from the Ministry of Social Welfare.
“DALIT ” is a Bengali word which literally means “someone trampled under the feet of someone else”. It is used to identify an outcast minority of oppressed, exploited and deprived people. The founders and visionary-dreamers of DALIT NGO are some young educated people belonging to the Dalit community, who were inspired by the autobiography of Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar.
